Resumen
The traditional Boundary Layer Wind Tunnels have served the wind community well in simulating large, synoptic wind systems and their effects on buildings and structures. With recognition of the importance of the non-synoptic winds (such as tornadoes and downbursts) affecting building, structures and energy devices the need has grown during the last decade to conceive new physical simulators capable to simulate these type of events. These new facilities also allow us to study their impact on our buildings and structures.
In view of all this, we present in this lecture some of the emerging results in terms of the effects of tornadic and downburst winds on low rise and high rise buildings as well as on structures such as transmission lines. We will also present some results related to the effect of wind on energy structures such as solar panels and roof integrated wind energy devices. This presentation has been triggered at Western by the new Wind Engineering Energy and Environment WindEEE Dome and Research Institute, that Professor Hangan created and has been leading for the last 8 years, see www.windeee.ca.
